Today, I’ve been fortunate enough to be at an event, ISC 2009, that wraps up with Zig Ziglar being interviewed by his youngest daughter. These are my notes from the presentation.

Zig fell a while ago and has some balance and short term memory loss. He did not let this slow him down though.

Learning…he always learns and tries to learn…described his time in the car listening to other speakers.

You can get whatever you want in life as long as you spend time helping others get what they want.

When he was in school, he did not excel. He passed though. Never read a novel. He founded a center for ethical leadership.

His first job was in Fifth Grade at a grocery. His boss did not allow him to speak with any grammatical errors.

Learned you cannot make a good deal with a bad person.

He never worries. Its interest paid before its due. Always tell the truth and do the right thing and you don’t have to worry.

Funny one: “Read the Bible and newspaper every day so he knows what both sides are up to”

He and his daughter look at his recent injury and decided to write about it. Its a great way to make the most of the problem. His daughter reminded him about the things he repeated (due to the memory loss). He’s very good natured about the problem and I hope we all have the kind of support he does.

Last week, I had the pleasure of giving a “how to” presentation on networking for the KY Association of Land Surveyors. It’s not only on social media – rather, its about meeting people in person, remembering names, and more.

The slides and videos (raw and unedited) are posted over on the new company site: http://tinyurl.com/kaps2009
and below…

There are lots of practical networking tips in the presentation. If you, or your organization would like me to give the presentation to your group, let me know.

–

First, the video, then the slides…

Networking Presentation from WebMedley on Vimeo.

The video – a little dark, but audio is good and it’ll match to the slides.

Outsourcing has been a key part of my career and will continue to be. Many people ask about it and others are pretty amazed that it happens right here in KY. The purpose of this series of blog posts is to detail some of the lessons learned. I hope they will help you avoid some of the errors I made and enjoy the benefits of outsourcing.

Outsourcing has been going on for a long, long time. It’s not just a US phenomenon and its an important factor of our global economic growth and improving the world.

For those who believe everything should be made and serviced in their own country…well, unless you are from southeast Asia, you’d better be prepared to be naked a lot. Oh, don’t drive, take medicine, etc…It’s nearly impossible to live without participating in outsourcing.

First, a few reasons why I outsource.

I believe in doing what I do best and letting others do the rest. (See the Four Hour Workweek for another person who believes the same.) My own skills are with people and organization of processes/resources. So this is what I do. All of the graphics, software, taxes, etc go to another person or company.

When I outsource overseas, I’m able to gain financially through arbitrage while helping those in other areas grow their business. Sure, the dollar is low compared to the Euro, but its still stronger than the currencies where I outsource. This allows me to buy at one price and resell at a higher price. All of this while still providing a service/product to clients within their budget and the dollarized value of the solution.

Outsourcing helps other companies grow. This is very true overseas. In the past five years, I’ve been able to help other companies grow (people and revenue) and gain other clients.

The educational experience. Others learn about my business and I get to learn about theirs. If multiple nations are involved, then there’s even more learning. My clients get to learn about it, too.

It saves me time. Time is precious. Outsourcing is one of the tools I use to control my lifestyle. Unless I have client meetings, I can work almost whenever and wherever I want. For a person with a lot going on and a growing family, this is important.

Summing up the why: the benefits of outsourcing help me achieve the lifestyle my wife and I want.

Some people outsource part of their personal lives to overseas folks. Although I’m sure some activities could be performed quite well, I have not ventured into this area yet.

That’s all for now. The bulk of the lessons learned will be in the next post.

Help raise funds for the Red Cross and Show the Power of Online Fundraising! I will match your donation to the Red Cross between now and March 24th.

The Bluegrass Area Chapter of the Red Cross is raising funds and I’ve agreed to help. Their Heroes Campaign is designed to raise about $80,000 and nominate people in the region to be recognized for their heroic efforts.

I’ve agreed to be one of the team captains and raise at least $3,000 by March 24th. This is a request for your help.

If you donate to the cause, I’ll match your donation and you can nominate someone to be a Hero.

I would love to show our local chapter the power of online fundraising. If you choose to donate online, please put my name in the “Comments” box on their form.

Here are the steps to take:

Decide to help the Red Cross — do you really need to decide to help them?

Choose how much to donate. I suggest a minimum of $25, but I’d love to see an average online donation of $100.

Choose your method of donating. This Red Cross page gives you many ways: http://www.redcrosslexky.org/donate.htm

Just write my name in somewhere on your donation or e-mail me to let me know you donated. You can also use this blog post and comment your amount. I’ll match it.

After you donate, don’t forget to nominate a Hero using this PDF: http://www.redcrosslexky.org/Heroes%20Nomination.pdf

Fax the PDF to me at 859-422-8422.

The timeframe is tight — just a month — so let’s get to it!

And of course — all donations are tax deductible!

The thousands of people aided in the area thank you.

I’ve been asked by a few people about my sales proposal template. So, I thought I’d put a short walkthrough of the basic ideas together and post it to the web.

Update: I’ve removed the video and doc for the time being. It’ll be back in place soon with info from WebMedley.

If you’d like me to review your proposal style or upcoming proposal, just send a note or comment here.

If you are in business development, sales, or marketing, I’d love to hear from you on the format and order. This document can always improve.
