"Getting Real" — What is it?

The phrase means different things to different people. We all know it comes down to:

No BS — tell me how it is.

Why don’t we operate like this normally? We all want the truth and in the simplest means possible in our business conversations. Movies, literature, and other art forms can take time and style to present concepts.

Getting Real means working with clients, vendors, and co-workers in a simple and efficient manner to discover issues and solve problems. The “Let’s Get Real” book I’ve mentioned before does a great job of explaining it.

The premise is that we remove the politics and defenses we normally have and talk openly about business. In sales, this may be a prospect and a salesperson discussing the prospect’s needs and the salesperson’s fees (eventually). In HR, it may be a manager and an employee talking about what kind of performance problems the employee has and how to coach him/her to success.

Do you practice “getting real”?
